Philosophy
I have evolved my philosophy of winning performance over 16 years of working at the highest level in sport, and through learning from some of the world's best practitioners and coaches. I have been fortunate to travel extensively and observe first-hand how the best in the world approach their preparation.
No Excuses
My philosophy can be summarised as follows:
- Individual - every athlete and performer is different and what works for one will not for another. My philosophy starts with gaining a full understanding of the individual, their motivations, their idiosyncrasies and their specific needs.
- Obsessive attention to basics - Winning is about tiny margins and elite performance often comes back to the ability to consistently perform the basics perfectly. The guaranteed way to succeed is to try to do 100 things 1% better every day, rather than seeking that elusive 'magic bullet'.
- TEAM - Together Everyone Achieves More - performance support cannot operate in isolation. Every aspect of support, from nutrition through strength and power development to coaching must work together. The support team concept is fundamental to my approach.
- Optimal not excessive - true winning performance is about a balance of all the factors involved in winning. Understanding when enough is enough is critical to balancing the competing demands of various specialisms in supporting performance.
- Objective - measurement and tracking of key attributes is critical to understanding performance but also vital in terms of providing meaningful feedback to the athlete and coach.
- Athlete focused - it's all about the athlete, not about the rest of us. If it doesn't help the athlete to perform, we don't do it.
